Day Open Straddle: One Breakout Trade Per Day

Each day the system waits for price to move more than 15 points away from the day open, then trades in that direction as long as price is still inside the three day high and low range. It takes one trade per day, never on Sunday, with a 0.60% stop and a 0.40% target.

Known weaknesses

  • The stop is larger than the target, so it relies on the 62.07% win rate. A drawdown of EUR 3,271.20 against EUR 5,077.00 profit shows how quickly losses can stack up.
  • Only 3 markets beyond the main run were tested, all on 1 to 2 minute charts, so evidence is narrow.
  • Profit factor was not recorded because only sweep data exists, and the fixed 15 point entry distance fits some instruments better than others.

How to load it

  1. Copy the code with the copy button above the code block.
  2. In ProRealTime, open a chart of the instrument and timeframe you want to test, then open ProOrder > New trading system and choose "Create with programming".
  3. Paste the code, give the system a name and save it.
  4. Click "Backtest", set your own spread and position size, and run it before you consider trading it live.

Questions

About this strategy

Can I automate it in ProOrder?

Yes, it trades 1 contract with the stop, target and one trade per day rule built in. The profit exit closes at market once the best close is 0.35% ahead, so it is not a resting stop.

Where was it tested?

The main run was Dow Jones 3 minutes. Nikkei 225 1 minute made USD 5,629.50, Dow Jones 2 minutes made EUR 5,577.50 and Gold 1 minute made EUR 378.10.

How much capital should I consider?

At 1 contract on Dow Jones 3 minutes the maximum drawdown was EUR 3,271.20. Keep enough on top of your broker margin to handle that.

Why such short timeframes?

The setup is about the first move away from the day open, which plays out within hours. Short charts catch the 15 point move close to when it happens.
